Abstract

Acute appendicitis is one of the main causes of surgical emergency. Its peak incidence is located between the second and third decade of life with a risk of 8.6% and 6.5% for men and women, respectively. The clinical history and physical examination continue to be the pillars of the diagnostic approach, together with the use of imaging studies in cases of doubt. Laparoscopic appendectomy is considered the "gold standard" for the management of this condition. The single-port variant of this procedure was first performed in 1992 by Pelosi, offering the same benefits as the multiport modality, with the advantage of fewer incisions. We present the case of a 52-year-old male patient with clinical symptoms highly suggestive of acute appendicitis and a history of umbilical hernia, who underwent the first laparoscopic one-port appendectomy reported in our institution and was discharged on his first postoperative day without complications.
